It's really up to you. The 2 major factors would be how much work you put into the game before buying VX, and how much of a hassle in time and effort it would take to transfer/re-enter the data from the old program to the new one.

I have no opinion on the redesigns, as I'm old enough to have experienced far more drastic character and setting changes from the Sonic franchise in the past.
